1. copyright-campaigns
   In June and July 2015 an initiative began to preserve freedom of panorama, which permits pictorial reproduction of copyrighted works in public space without the author's permission, after a European draft threatened to restrict it; more than 4,500 people signed an open letter to members of the European Parliament. From February 2018 the association campaigned against upload filters in the European copyright reform. On 21 March 2019 the German-language Wikipedia was switched off entirely for 24 hours in protest, the first time access to it had been blocked in its history; the directive was adopted by the European Parliament on 26 March.

   "Im Juni und Juli 2015 startet eine Initiative zum Erhalt der Panoramafreiheit. 2. fdc-impetus
   Wikimedia Deutschland's anniversary timeline dates the Funds Dissemination Committee to September 2012 under the heading that it "is established", and states in the body that the committee is a body for international distribution of funds, is composed of volunteer members of the Wikimedia movement, and takes up its work in September 2012. The association states that it gives important impetus for the founding of the FDC and that it is an advocate of decentralised structures within the international movement.

   The association was founded on 13 June 2004 in Berlin by 34 active Wikipedia authors. The timeline gives as background that by December 2003 press and partner enquiries to the two-year-old German Wikipedia had grown beyond what volunteer authors could handle. On the evening before the founding, the German-language Wikipedia passed 100,000 articles, with founders and Jimmy Wales present at the c-base in Berlin.

4. fundraising-handover
   In August 2010, for the first time, the Wikimedia Foundation did not run the donation campaign on behalf of all international chapters, and many national organisations took it on themselves in the form of banner campaigns. A year later the task was explicitly assigned to Wikimedia Deutschland, on the grounds that a joint cross-border appeal for donations created too many legal weak points.

5. international-and-coalitions
   The association took part in preparing and running the first Wikimania in Frankfurt am Main in August 2005, contributing both staff and organisation. The first constituent meeting of the EU Policy Advocacy Group took place in Brussels in April 2013; the association states that it, together with a small number of other chapters, contributed decisively to this initial step. In September 2021 it co-founded Bündnis F5 with Reporter ohne Grenzen, AlgorithmWatch, Open Knowledge Foundation Deutschland and the Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte. In summer 2022 it agreed with 21 other Wikimedia organisations to found Wikimedia Europe.

   The association's anniversary timeline records under September 2012 that the Stabsstelle Internationales (international unit) was founded. It adds that from then on Wikimedia Deutschland became an important actor in the creation of global governance structures and a source of impetus for the global Wikimedia movement.

   In December 2005 the parents of the deceased hacker known as Tron obtained an interim injunction from a Berlin court barring the Wikimedia Foundation from naming his surname on its websites. On 16 May 2008 the Landgericht Köln held that Wikimedia Deutschland is not responsible for the content of Wikipedia, in a case brought by a Frankfurt publisher seeking an injunction over how it was portrayed in an article; the Landgericht Hamburg reached a similar conclusion in a later case. In November 2015 the Reiss-Engelhorn case began, in which a Wikipedian who had uploaded images of works from the Mannheim Reiss-Engelhorn museums to Wikimedia Commons was sued; the Bundesgerichtshof decided in the museum's favour.

8. professionalisation
   The first general assembly took place on 26 June 2005 at the c-base in Berlin, by which point the association had 184 members. In October 2006 the association resolved to establish a permanent management and its first paid position; founding member Arne Klempert took the role and the first office was rented in Frankfurt am Main on 1 October 2006 because he lived there. On 1 November 2008 the office moved to Berlin. Pavel Richter took over as managing director on 1 August 2009. At the general assembly of 19 November 2011 in Hannover a volunteer Präsidium was elected for the first time, replacing the previous volunteer Vorstand.

9. technical-and-glam-projects
   In December 2008 Wikimedia Commons received roughly 100,000 images from the German Federal Archives under a CC BY-SA licence. In 2009 the association funded the Toolserver, giving the community direct access to a copy of the wiki databases. The Technische Wünsche project, which surveys the community on desired software improvements to MediaWiki and implements them, began in September 2013 and marked its tenth year in 2023. The Lizenzhinweisgenerator, a tool that produces correct attribution notices for freely licensed images, launched on 30 March 2016. The first GLAM project involving the association took place at the British Museum on 4 June 2010, and the GLAM digital series began in February 2021.

   "2008 erhält sie vom Bundesarchiv auf einen Schlag knapp 100.000 Bilder unter der Lizenz CC BY-SA [...] Ehrenamtlichen Autor*innen soll mit technischen Verbesserungen der Wikipedia Software ihre Arbeit erleichtert werden.
