- The association took part in preparing and running the first Wikimania in Frankfurt am Main in August 2005, contributing both staff and organisation. The first constituent meeting of the EU Policy Advocacy Group took place in Brussels in April 2013; the association states that it, together with a small number of other chapters, contributed decisively to this initial step. In September 2021 it co-founded Bündnis F5 with Reporter ohne Grenzen, AlgorithmWatch, Open Knowledge Foundation Deutschland and the Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte. In summer 2022 it agreed with 21 other Wikimedia organisations to found Wikimedia Europe.

Vom 4. bis 7. August 2005 lernen sich das erste Mal Wikipedia-Communitymitglieder aus aller Welt persönlich kennen: Das erste internationale Community-Treffen, die sogenannte „Wikimania“, findet in Frankfurt am Main statt. Wikimedia Deutschland beteiligt sich personell und organisatorisch an der Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Veranstaltung.
