- Quote
Perhaps the most important historical advance in the treatment of hyperuricemia was the development of allopurinol, the first xanthine oxidase inhibitor. George Hitchings and Gertrude Elion were awarded the 1988 Nobel prize in medicine for their work in developing allopurinol, azathioprine, and five other drugs. Allopurinol has since become the most frequently used uric acid lowering drug in clinical practice.
