Claims

  1. Jessica Dheere co-founded SMEX; it initially trained people in blogging and digital content, and after the 2011 Arab Spring began building a database of laws affecting digital rights (Cyrilla), later expanded beyond the region.
"This led her to co-found Social Media Exchange (SMEX), a Beirut–based digital-rights research and advocacy group focused on documenting government infringements on online speech in the Arab region. ... Initially, we trained people in how to start a blog, how to produce audio, how to develop good digital content, and how to set up a Facebook page. After the Arab Spring in 2011, we started developing a database of laws affecting digital rights in the region. ... This effort is called cyrilla.org and it’s expanded to Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, and elsewhere."
