The Wikimedia Foundation said it was unlikely that banned users were acting as Saudi government agents, and that SMEX and DAWN had not shared their statement with the Foundation and their cited sources could be wrong.
"Wikimedia said this is "unlikely to be the case", adding that some users "who may have been Saudi" were among those banned. "These organisations did not share the statement with the [Wikimedia] Foundation, and 'sources of knowledge' as cited in their release can get things wrong," it said."
