I am a little worried about building two parallel comment systems, for a few reasons:
Other features like notifications, contributor comments or "recent changes" view either have to keep track of multiple comment types, or risk not showing the user what they are looking for;
Functionality we add in one place has to be added in another;
UX may fall out of sync between the two comment experiences.
I would suggest instead that we think about consolidating into a single comment system which happens to be "attachable" to something that is not a thread, such as a position. We then give the UX some flexibility (compact view vs. expansive views in the forum) which would also benefit both features. What do you think?
