Proposal: Mentioning people with @username

Status: Open.

Pull requests: None yet.

This builds on notifications on the site and comes right after it.

What changes

Three steps: a forum post where @AnotherEditor is shown as a highlighted link; a text box where typing @Ano suggests matching usernames; and the notification AnotherEditor receives
Mock-up: a mention in a forum post, the username suggestions, and the notification (invented example data). Open Knowledge Association · CC0 · Wikimedia Commons

Why

Today there is no way to ask a specific person to look at something on Agpedia. People have to hope the other person follows the thread, or contact them outside the site. Mentions bring the right person into a discussion with one word.

How it works

Technical notes

When a post or comment is saved, usernames after @ are matched against accounts (ignoring case). Each match creates a "mention" notification through the notification system from the notifications proposal. Rendering turns matched mentions into profile links. The username suggestions use a small lookup that returns a few matching usernames, for signed-in users only.
