Der Verein soll die Aufgaben einer Sektion (engl. Local Chapter) der Wikimedia Foundation Inc. (Florida, USA) wahrnehmen. Die Unabhängigkeit des Vereins ist hierdurch nicht beeinträchtigt. Die Wikimedia Foundation fungiert als Dachorganisation aller nationalen Wikimedia-Sektionen, koordiniert die dem Vereinszweck entsprechenden Aktivitäten im internationalen Sektor und verwaltet den Namen Wikimedia sowie die Namen der verschiedenen internationalen Wikimedia-Projekte.
