Ives incorporated three of his Four Ragtime Dances into the two scherzo movements of the First Piano Sonata, adding to the fourth movement a newly composed passage of particularly intense ragtime-inflected rhythms; material from movement IIb ('In the Inn') was later reorchestrated for a movement of A Set of Pieces for Theatre or Chamber Orchestra.
