- A few days before the association was to present a strategy paper on realigning itself, the Präsidium separated from executive director Pavel Richter, announcing through the Wikimedia blog that it had concluded the realignment could not be implemented with the incumbent executive director. Neither the strategy paper nor the change of leadership had appeared on the agenda for the forthcoming general assembly. The Präsidium and Richter agreed on a consensual separation. The removal was not welcomed by the whole Präsidium: its chair Nikolas Becker told the Tagesspiegel that Richter had done outstanding work building up the association, which was also financially sound, and criticised among other things that the decision had come at far too short notice. Several long-standing members, among them the co-founders Kurt Jansson and Arne Klempert, had warned the Präsidium in an open letter that a hasty removal could do immense damage to the association and the projects it funds, and that the Präsidium should on no account create facts before the general assembly the following week.

Wenige Tage vor der Vorstellung eines Strategiepapiers zur Neuausrichtung von Wikimedia-Deutschland [...] hat sich das Präsidium des Vereins überraschend von Vorstand Pavel Richter getrennt. Das Gremium sei zu dem Schluss gekommen, die Neuausrichtung „nicht mit dem derzeitigen Vorstand umsetzen zu können“ [...] Am Verfahren bemängelt Becker unter anderem, dass die Entscheidung viel zu kurzfristig kam.
