The radial velocity method measures how a star moves under the pull of its orbiting planet: light from a star moving towards us is bluer, and redder when it moves away. The transit method measures the dip in a star's brightness when a planet passes in front of it. 51 Pegasi b orbits only about eight million kilometres from its star, taking four days per orbit.
