Neubig writes that the project began on March 12, 2024 under the name OpenDevin, an homage to Devin by Cognition, and was created by Binyuan Hui and Junyang Lin, both members of the team developing the Qwen language models. He, Robert Brennan, and Xingyao Wang joined early; the three then founded All Hands AI, and the project was renamed OpenHands. By March 2025 he reported over 50,000 GitHub stars, more than 3,500 commits, and over 250 unique contributors.
