Fermentation greatly reduces aspalathin (less than 17% remains in the processed product). Only three human bioavailability studies of aspalathin existed; in one, 0.74% of aspalathin from a green rooibos infusion was excreted in urine over 12 hours. The authors conclude that antidiabetic mechanisms are shown in cell and animal studies while human evidence remains preliminary.
"The C-glycosyl parent compounds are active in cell models, but poor bioavailability would limit the therapeutic effects in vivo."
