In a 6-week study of 40 adults at risk for cardiovascular disease who drank six cups of fermented rooibos daily and were compared with a control period, plasma lipid-peroxidation markers fell, LDL cholesterol and triacylglycerols decreased, and HDL cholesterol rose, while plasma antioxidant capacity did not change. The design was a sequential comparison with a control period rather than a placebo-controlled trial.
"After a washout period of 2 weeks, 40 volunteers consumed six cups of fermented/traditional rooibos daily for 6 weeks, followed by a control period."
