Judd writes that Brahms started the trio in 1880, set it aside for two years while working on the Second Piano Concerto and Third Symphony, and finished it in summer 1882 at Bad Ischl, aged 49. He describes the first movement as opening with four related themes in 3/4 time, using hemiolas and with a development modulating to D-flat major; the slow movement as A minor theme and variations with folk-song roots resembling the Hungarian Dances; the Scherzo as C minor and ghostly; and the finale as blending sonata and rondo forms.
