The Hyperion notes state that Brahms began the work in June 1880, completed it two years later, and that it was published in December 1882 as Op. 87. They describe him working on C major and E-flat major trios at once, with Clara Schumann preferring the E-flat piece, which Brahms destroyed. They describe the first movement's imperious first theme given out in octaves by violin and cello alone, a slow movement of variations on a melancholy A minor theme with a 'Scotch snap' rhythm, a scherzo whose predominant dynamic is pianissimo, and a good-humoured rondo finale.
