In the First Piano Sonata's five movements, the first and third are in cumulative form on hymn-tune themes; the second and fourth together present a set of four hymn variations infused with ragtime rhythms; and the finale is a free fantasy. The work was assembled and revised around 1915-16 and again around 1921.
