Claims

  1. According to the Brahms Gesamtausgabe, Brahms began the trio in 1880, at first completing only the first movement, which he rewrote before composing the full four-movement work in 1882. No copyist's fair copy of the score exists; the autograph served as the engraving model for the Simrock first edition. The critical edition (Serie II, Band 6b, edited by Bernd Wiechert) appeared in Munich in 2024.
