- Asim Ghafoor was released in August 2022 after a UAE court overturned his three-year prison sentence but upheld the money laundering conviction and imposed a fine of 5 million dirhams; UAE officials said the case was strictly about financial crimes, and US officials said the arrest was not made at Washington's request.
