Depuis le XIXe siècle, la Charte fédérale de 1291 est considérée comme le document fondateur de la Confédération, conclu entre les communautés d'Uri, de Schwyz et d'Unterwald pour se défendre mutuellement contre toute violence ou injustice.

La Charte fédérale n'a été officiellement reconnue comme document fondateur qu'à la fin du XIXe siècle, à l'initiative du Conseil fédéral qui organisa les fêtes du jubilé de 1891.
