What changes

Old and alternative addresses of a page keep working and lead to its main address, and pages can be cited by a short ID that never changes.

Why

Renaming a page today breaks every link to its old address, and alternative addresses show the same page under two addresses. A permanent short ID gives citations and other databases a link that survives any rename.
