Entertainment lighting sources progressed from limelight (late 1830s) and the carbon arc (Paris Opera, 1846) to incandescent lamps that by the 1880s had replaced gas and limelight in theatres, tungsten halogen lamps from the mid-1960s, high intensity discharge lamps that grew rapidly in the 1980s with automated lighting, and LED-based stage luminaires from around 2008.
"Starting around 2008, LED-based stage luminaires could be found on stages worldwide."
