Assertion
Searching Kepler data for 42,000 Sun-like stars, the authors found 603 planets, 10 of them Earth-size (1–2 Earth radii) and receiving comparable starlight. Correcting for missed planets, they estimate 11 ± 4% of Sun-like stars have an Earth-size planet receiving 1–4 times Earth's starlight; extrapolating to longer orbits, 22 ± 8% have one in the habitable zone (0.25–4 times Earth's starlight), and the nearest may lie within 12 light-years.
