Claims

  1. Memorial Sloan Kettering's monograph states that human studies of rooibos are very limited; it lists case reports of liver toxicity or elevated liver enzymes after large daily intakes, advises caution for people with hormone-sensitive cancers because compounds from rooibos showed estrogenic activity, and notes that rooibos may lower blood levels of drugs cleared by CYP3A enzymes, including one transplant patient whose tacrolimus levels fell after drinking over 2 liters daily.
"Although lab studies suggest rooibos tea is rich in antioxidants, studies in humans are very limited."
