Claims

  1. In 1880 Brahms wrote the opening movement of a trio in E-flat major alongside the C major movement; he destroyed the E-flat movement and in 1882 expanded the C major movement into a four-movement trio. After a Christmas reading, Clara Schumann recorded that she enthused about individual passages but that the whole did not satisfy her, except for the Andante, which she found wonderful. The work was premiered not in Vienna but at the fifth chamber music evening of the Frankfurt Museumsgesellschaft.
