Claims

  1. Brahms completed the opening movement in June 1880 at Ischl and the remaining three movements in June 1882, also at Ischl. Private run-throughs preceded the public premiere: August 25, 1882 at Altaussee, and October 19, 1882 at the Vienna home of Theodor Billroth. The public premiere was December 29, 1882 in Frankfurt. A companion trio in E-flat major was abandoned.
  2. Brahms told his publisher Fritz Simrock that Simrock had not so far had such a beautiful trio from him and very probably had not published one to match it in the last ten years.
