Neubig describes the project's originators, Junyang Lin and Binyuan Hui, as planning to produce an architecture diagram and a development plan, and says he proposed instead building a Devin-like interface immediately so that contributors could start working on it. He states that he raised this with Lin and Hui and that they agreed before he proceeded.
"I talked to Junyang and Binyuan and they said, “OK, yeah, let's do this.”"

Robert Brennan states that investors approached the project within a week or two of it taking off, and that he held one-to-one conversations with all six people who were early to the project - himself, Graham Neubig, Xingyao Wang, Junyang Lin, Binyuan Hui, and Bowen Li - to gauge interest in founding a company. Neubig agreed immediately and Wang needed convincing because he was mid-PhD. Lin, Hui, and Li declined; Brennan attributes this to their existing careers at Alibaba and at a research lab in China. The remaining three founded All Hands AI.
"I had a 1-1 conversation with basically all six of the different folks who invested early on in the project to gauge how interested they were in starting a company ... The other folks have wonderful careers at Alibaba and a research lab in China. So they're like, “We're happy where we're at.”"
