Assertion
Mayor and Queloz used their ELODIE spectrograph on a 1.93 m telescope at the Haute-Provence Observatory to survey 142 stars; Mayor announced 51 Pegasi b on October 6, 1995, at a conference in Florence. The planet is roughly Jupiter's mass and circles its star every four days, which no one had expected, and it was soon confirmed by Geoffrey Marcy and Paul Butler.
