Claims

  1. For persistent or severe infantile acne, or when signs of hyperandrogenism are present, Gencler and colleagues recommend bone age assessment and hormone tests (FSH, LH, testosterone, DHEA, DHEAS, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, prolactin, ACTH stimulation); treatment options include topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, topical antibiotics, oral erythromycin or trimethoprim, intralesional triamcinolone for nodules and cysts, and isotretinoin for severe or scarring cases.
  2. Gencler and colleagues describe infantile acne as occurring between 1 and 12 months of age (occasionally up to 14 to 16 months), more common in males, and attribute it to sensitivity to circulating adrenal and gonadal androgens with a significant genetic predisposition; they report that lesions disappear after one to two years in some patients but usually persist, with most recovering after age four to five.
"While the lesions disappear after one to two years in certain patients, they usually persist and most recover after age four to five years."
