In a January 27, 2023 written letter to Fr. James Martin, Pope Francis clarified that his reference to 'sin' in the AP interview was not about homosexual orientation but about Catholic teaching that all sexual acts outside marriage are sinful.
"When I said it is a sin, I was simply referring to Catholic moral teaching, which says that every sexual act outside of marriage is a sin."
